How it Works

A Flat Plate Collector operates as a heat exchanger, converting radiant solar energy into heat energy through the greenhouse effect. It captures solar energy to heat water for various household uses, including bathing, washing, and heating. This technology can even be utilized for heating outdoor swimming pools and hot tubs.

The collector typically consists of a heat-absorbing plate made of copper or aluminum, painted or chemically etched black for maximum solar radiation absorption. Copper pipes, known as risers, run across the plate, containing a heat transfer fluid, usually water.

As sunlight heats the absorbing surface, the heat is transferred to the fluid, which is then circulated for domestic use. The entire system is enclosed in an insulated box, with glazing material to protect the absorber plate while minimizing heat loss.
