Description

Coal to Methanol is a vital process in the production of methanol, a key chemical used in various industrial applications. Initiated in China in 1957, this method employs coal or coke as the primary feedstock, evolving significantly over the decades. The process has adapted to include natural gas and heavy oil, with advancements leading to medium and small-sized plants. Given China’s abundant coal reserves, the shift towards cleaner coal utilization technologies has positioned coal as the predominant feedstock for methanol production since the 1990s. The establishment of a 200kt/a coal to methanol plant in Shanghai marked a significant milestone, paving the way for larger capacity production. Today, several 600 kt/a plants operate continuously, with super-large scale projects, including 1800kt/a plants, now in stable operation or under construction, reflecting the growing market demand for methanol.
