The meter-gauge diesel electric multiple unit (DEMU) is an advanced and robust train designed specifically for the Ghana Railway in Africa. This state-of-the-art EMU features a six-car formation consisting of two motor cars and four trailer cars, strategically arranged with motor cars at each end. Powered by diesel generators, the train operates on an innovative AC-DC-AC electric drive system, ensuring efficient performance and reliability. Each motor car is meticulously designed with a driver’s cab, control room, power room, cooling room, and passenger saloon. Notably, the traction motors and gear boxes are supplied by VOITH, while CAT diesel engines power the unit, complemented by traction converters from KIEPE. The transmission mode employs a “one for two” system, with auxiliary converters serving as power units for added efficiency.
This DEMU is not just an engineering marvel but also emphasizes passenger comfort, offering semi-cushioned seating, movable windows, and automatic sliding-plug doors in its trailer cars.
